Best of Children’s Fall/Winter 2010 Cool Campaigns

I meant to blog about this a few weeks ago but Stylesight (the leading online provider of trend forecasting for the style and design industry) has recently featured the shoot I did for Hucklebones last year in their Best of Children’s Fall/Winter 2010 Cool Campaigns. I’m obviously extremely pleased that the lovely Zoe & Dan from Hucklebones have been getting such positive reviews about their A/W 2010 collection but I’m also pretty chuffed that the shoot has been nominated alongside the likes of Bonpoint, Baby Dior, Essentiel and Anne Valerie Hash. Pretty good company to be in! If you want to see the rest of the collection then here’s a link to their A/W 2010 lookbook.

Finally, keep an eye on the the blog as I’ll be posting a few pics from this years Spring/Summer 2011 collection very soon.

Adding Contrast in Photoshop

In this tutorial we’re going to look at a great technique for adding contrast to your images. The technique uses two curves adjustment layers, one to control the lighter parts of the image and a second to control the darker parts. Each layer uses a simple luminosity mask to restrict the adjustments so they only effect those specific parts of the image. There are obviously simpler ways to boost the contrast in an image but I really find this technique to give far better results than a lot of the methods I’ve tried.

1. This straight out of camera image is relatively well exposed in terms of the histogram but it’s pretty flat and would really benefit from a contrast boost, especially in the shadow areas. Open your image and click on the channels palette. If the channels palette isn’t immediately available select it from the menu bar by going Window > Channels.

Anna & Emily | Twins Photo Shoot

Its been an incredibly busy couple of months. Unfortunately Milo came down with suspected Measles and for obvious reasons I had to cancel all my children & baby shoots for a couple of weeks. Rescheduling everything has been a nightmare, especially the newborn shoots, but I’m finally starting to catch up and only have two or three shoots to finish editing. Blogging has unfortunately fallen to the bottom of my to-do list so I apologise for my absence and the lack of images recently. Anyway, I have quite a few shoots to blog but rather than bombard you with pictures I thought I’d space it out a little and just post a few of my favourite sessions. Finally, I’d like to say thank you to all my recent clients for their patience while I’ve been catching up, especially the ones who had their sessions moved while I was in “quarantine”.

So here’s the first few images from my backlog, a fun shoot in Solihull with a couple of lively twins called Anna & Emily.

Hucklebones | Children’s Fashion Photoshoot

It’s been a few months since I posted this magazine cover featuring an image I shot for the Hucklebones Autumn/Winter 2010 collection. In fact, its been a while since I posted any images from the shoots I’ve been doing over the last few months!! Anyway, a variety of images from this shoot have been featured on kid’s fashion blogs and magazines around the world but I thought I’d post a few of my personal favorites here.

Andy Duguid | Album Shoot

I generally like to have a location picked out for a shoot, especially when some of the images are to be used on artwork. Unfortunately this was not the case for a last minute shoot for trance producer (and fellow Scotsman) Andy Duguid for the artwork of his new album due for release on Tiesto‘s label, Black Hole Recordings.

After driving around for a while in silly heat we stumbled upon this great location just outside Currys – a big electrical retailer to my overseas friends. So, we set up a few small lights and grabbed a few shots before security noticed and ‘moved us on’. I’m really pleased with how they turned out but please feel free let me know what you think in the comments.

Skin Softening in Photoshop

Thereʼs plenty of skin softening (or skin smoothing) techniques and tutorials available on the internet. Some are pretty good, some not so much. Obviously, this is just my opinion and you should use whichever method or photoshop action you’re comfortable with but I thought by sharing one of my favorite techniques it might give you an alternative to play around with.

This technique shouldnʼt be a replacement for careful removal of blemishes by cloning, healing, patch tool or dodging & burning the skin – a technique I covered here a few months ago. This is a finishing technique and is best applied to skin that has already been retouched and colour corrected. Itʼs important to have good, clean skin before you start. However, as this effect should be kept subtle Iʼve decided to work on an image that has had very little retouch work other than basic blemish removal. This way I can be a little more heavy handed than I normally would and you can see the effect more clearly. This is also a great technique for getting rid of those fine little hairs on arms and legs.

1. Make a selection of the skin. There are many ways to make selections so just use your preferred method. For this tutorial I used the Quick Selection tool and the Refine Edge command to feather and contract my selection away from the edges of the body and face.
