I seem to be into simple baby portraits at the moment. I always like to have a bit of ‘quiet time’ during kids photo shoots so I can grab a few candid portraits. The images are a lot more natural when children aren’t aware of the camera or you’re not vying for their attention. Some clients like them, for others its not their thing, but at least they have the option and it doesn’t add much time to the shoot.
In this particular image there was a plain cream wall with patio doors to the right. It was fairly cloudy at the time so the light coming through the doors was nicely diffused. This little chap was facing the patio doors and I used a white reflector to bounce some light on to the back of his head. By excluding any background clutter you keep attention on the subject, almost everyone has a plain wall in their house somewhere and if you’ve got big windows or patio doors next to it all the better.
I’d normally convert these type of shots to black & white but I liked the cream wall so decided to go with that as the direction for the post-processing by adding a yellow, vintage tone. Finally I added a subtle texture using this technique to remove it from the skin.
