I know a professional photographer who uses <a href="http://www.skyjuicesoftware.com/software/QuickFileRename" rel="nofollow">Quick File Rename</a> to automate the renaming process entirely. It can recognise RAW (CR2) image information so you can insert attributes like the image serial number which will instantly give your photos unique names. You can then combine this with the scheduler so that it renames your images at a certain time automatically. If you have hundreds of photos to take it's a real productivity boon.
