Simple Black & White Portraits

There’s nothing I like better than a simple black & white portrait. Here’s a couple I really liked from a recent portrait shoot. These were both shot in the open shade against a white wall. Both subjects are holding a silver reflector, positioned below and just out of the frame. I use this simple technique a lot for this kind of shot as it gives a really crisp look to the light. Simple B&W conversion and toning was done in Lightroom 2.

Anita Robinson - Hi Alan,

Wow, I must say that your photography is fab. I am just starting off as a portrait photographer. I am finding your tutorials brilliant, thank you for posting them on your site.

I noticed that in one of your blogs you mentioned you had purchased 24-70 f2.8L and love it. I recently purchased this lens and the 7d canon. And I am really struggling with this lens. My pictures are slightly off focus and not very sharp. I am throughly disappointed. I came back from a personal project shot yesterday and was really disappointed and it is really throwing my confidence. Thing is because the lens and camera are new I am not sure where I am going wrong or whether one or the other is slightly off? Would you be able to shine any light on this.

kind regards

Anita
