Music Photographer | Birmingham

I love simple shots like these from a recent shoot with James, an awesome bass player, songwriter/producer based in Birmingham. Both images were shot against a plain grey wall using one 580EX flash through a Lastolite EzyBox (which I absolutely love using at the moment). If you’ve got a sec then check out his Soundcloud page  and give him a little support on Twitter.

Dave Seaman | DJ Press Shots

I can’t believe that I’m so behind with blogging that I’m posting images from shoots in February! These particular images are from a shoot with DJ Dave Seaman who needed a new set of pictures for Press, PR and websites. Aside from my one of my Pocket Wizards failing on me the shoot was a lot of fun. We shot it all in and around the Zellig Building in the Custard Factory, Birmingham which has a great mix of backgrounds. We got a huge variety of shots but these are a few of my favourites.

Also, a lot of you may also be unaware that I help put Dave’s radio mix for Frisky Radio together every month. If you like good quality, electronic house music then you should definitely check out the show. Its free!

Baby Jacob | Newborn Photography, Harborne

Its been a while and this post is waaaaay overdue. Please accept my most humble of apologies! Despite all the promises I make to blog more often I keep finding myself in this same situation – with a massive backlog of images to blog – more newborn shots, musician press shots, engagement shoots and even some weddings. But instead of driving your RSS feed crazy over the next 3 weeks I figured I’ll just post some of my favouite shots from some random shoots and try and convince my wife that she should just look after my blog instead of me. Wish me luck.

Anyway, first up is baby Jacob, photographed at just a few days old. Exceptionally cute and the perfect model. Plus he was had an awesome bobble hat. He didn’t pee on my blankets either, which never happens!!

I’ve finally figured out how to get a newborn’s head to stay upright:)

Tilt-Shift Lens Photoshop Technique

Tilt-shift photography has become quite a trendy effect within portraiture, especially wedding photography. Unfortunately good Tilt-shift lenses aren’t cheap so I thought a tutorial on how to achieve similar results in Photoshop might be useful. There’s a variety of ways of creating this effect in Photoshop but most of them involve you having to create some kind of mask where you want the focus point of the photo to be. This can be a little annoying if you want to change your mind after previewing the rendered results so I’d like to show you an alternative method. One that allows you to preview the effect in real time and change the point of focus as many times as you like until its perfect without having to create any masks.

1. Start by duplicating your background layer and name it Tilt-shift. If you already have active layers then you can merge visible onto a new layer by using the key command Command+Alt+Shift+E (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E (PC).

Yes. I occasionally shoot weddings.

It’s not something I really post about or even actively market myself as but I have been known to shoot the occasional wedding. I’ve said it before but I have a lot of admiration for the ladies and gents who photograph weddings every weekend. It’s tiring work and can be extremely challenging if you’re not prepared. I’m not entirely sure why I don’t shoot more weddings than I do as I really enjoy it. Perhaps it comes down to just not having the time, perhaps its just because my feet really hurt afterwards, I dunno. Whatever.

Anyway, I wanted to post two of my favourite images from a wedding I shot towards the end of last year. This is my good friend Neil and his lovely new bride Vanessa who tied the knot at Fulham Registry Office before having a great reception at The Driver in Kings Cross. Neil & Ness both looked fab and were great fun to photograph. Big thanks also goes to Andy Rapkins for second shooting on the day and getting his “Big Ring Flash” out….a lot – not a euphemism:)

Hucklebones Spring/Summer 2011 Collection

The Hucklebones Spring/Summer 11 Collection I shot towards the end of last year has been getting some great press recently, both online and in magazines around the world. As the collection is now in stores I thought I would post a few of my favourite images from the shoot.

For the photographers amongst you I’ve also added a little (literally) shot of the very simple studio setup at the bottom of the post, two large softboxes and a marble colorama. The images were slightly over-exposed to create an airy look to the images.
